Twins Days 5K Run

Today a few friends and I participated in the Twins Days 5K Run, part of the annual Twins Days festival in Twinsburg, Ohio. Proceeds from the 5K run/walk and kid’s fun run benefit the Melanoma Research Foundation. Thank you to my friends for joining in, and thanks to all of the other runners and walkers!

Bicycle helmets provided by Bell Sports

Thank you to Bell Sports for providing both Ray and I with their Bell Influx bicycle helmet.

Kevin in his Bell Influx bicycle helmet

This is my favorite helmet, and I’m not just saying that because Bell gave me this one for free. This is the third Bell Influx that I have owned. I like it because it provides a good balance between high-end styling and fit, but at a moderate price. The sun visor is easily detachable for road bike riding.

Bell is a division of Easton Bell Sports, which also produces Giro helmets, Blackburn and Delphi cycling accessories, and other well-known products for motor sports and team sports under the Bell, Easton, and Riddell brands.

Mexican Fiesta

We held a Mexican Fiesta at The Farm Restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, featuring appetizers and beverages with a “south of the border” theme. All proceeds benefited the Melanoma Research Foundation.

Door prize drawings and a 50/50 raffle drawing were held; thanks to our guests for the donations of the door prizes. Through the prize drawings and other donations, $2,075.00 was raised for the MRF.

Entertainment was provided by Dan Pinciaro.

Emmanuel Yeboah

I had the honor of meeting Emmanuel Yeboah when he spoke at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio on February 8, 2007.

yeboah.jpb

Emmanuel Yeboah was born in Ghana, a nation in West Africa. He was born with a severely deformed leg. Physically disabled people in Ghana have traditionally been shunned, hidden, or even killed. Those who survive are left to a life of begging in the streets.

In July of 2002, Mr. Yeboah rode a bicycle across Ghana in order to raise awareness of the plight of disabled people in his country. By the time he finished his 10-day journey, he had become a national hero.

Since then, Mr. Yeboah has received the 2003 Casy Martin Award from Nike, and the 2005 ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage Award. He has used the funds from these awards and grants to distribute wheelchairs to disabled people in Ghana, and to provide scholarships for disabled Ghanaian children. His goal is to build a state-of-the-art sports academy in Ghana that will employ only the disabled, but will be open for use by all. He also hopes to organize a national team to compete in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, and plans to run for the Ghanaian Parliament.

A film has been made of Emmanuel Yeboah’s story, called Emmanuel’s Gift.

Many thanks to those in attendance, as well as those who were not able to attend, but sent donations. A total of $2,118.00 was raised for The Melanoma Research Foundation.

Bike to Work Week in Pittsburgh

National Bike to Work Week was held on May 17 through 21, 2004. The festivities in Pittsburgh were organized by Bike Pittsburgh, with help from Friends of the Riverfront and Venture Outdoors.

I stopped down for the Park ‘N Pedal event at the Manchester park ‘n ride lot on Tuesday, and the commuters’ breakfast at the portico of the city/county building on Friday. Both mornings started off with severe thunderstorms, but turned very pleasant by mid-morning.

Pedal Pittsburgh

Today was the 11th annual Pedal Pittsburgh. This 60-mile ride highlights the character, architecture, and landscapes of Pittsburgh’s many neighborhoods.
