George Madzia was born and raised in Adena, Ohio. For nearly 40 years, he served the community as the owner and proprietor of a gasoline and auto service station known as George’s Shell, later George’s Citgo, and eventually just George’s Service.
He was also active in community activities such as the Lion’s Club, and as an avid golfer, he helped to organize an annual golf tournament for local residents. He also enjoyed bicycling, hiking, and traveling with his family.
He was first diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of the year 2000, and was treated surgically. The disease returned a year later, and he underwent more surgery, followed by a year of drug treatments. The treatments were ineffective, unfortunately, and he succumbed to the effects of melanoma in November of 2002. He was 62 years old at the time of his death.
